“Hello!How are you?”

On October 31, Wu Zhaoshuo, a student at Qingsong Township Central School in Baisha Li Autonomous County, shared his impressions of his hometown in English for the first time, earning applause from his classmates.

On that day, the International Talent Rural Teaching Program—part of the "Shining Star" volunteer education initiative series—was launched here. As co-organizers, the Haikou International Talent Volunteer Service Team and the Foreign Experts Bookstore at the Haikou International Talent Home dispatched three outstanding international volunteers, including Fu Jihu, to deliver an engaging English interest class for students in grades four through six at the school.

"Hello! How are you?" At the beginning of the class, Fu Jihu, former professor at the National University of Singapore, bridged the gap with students through warm greetings and engaging interactions. Focusing on two themes—daily greetings and hometown introductions—he employed methods such as scenario simulations, word card games, and group discussions to help students overcome language barriers in a relaxed setting.

Other volunteers held picture cards that combined the scenic landscapes and local cuisine of Qingsong Township with English terms such as "mountain," "river," and "delicious food." They also organized a role-playing activity titled "Hometown Tourism Ambassador," where students worked in groups to recommend Qingsong Township's distinctive attractions to international tourists.

That afternoon, the volunteer teachers and volunteers also organized a football match with the students. "Everyone pay attention: when your teammate passes the ball, anticipate its direction in advance and stop it firmly using the inside of your foot!" Coach Lamine from Côte d'Ivoire explained while demonstrating the technique, using simple language and occasionally incorporating key English terms such as "dribble," "pass," and "shoot," allowing students to learn football skills while also gaining exposure to English vocabulary.

"I also want to play football." The exhilarating match sparked a strong interest in football among these students. A representative from Qingsong Township Central School remarked satisfactioningly, "Under the guidance of international volunteers, the students have been exposed to many novel and interesting experiences." "We hope that through professional instruction from international experts, rural students will not only master English but also communicate confidently in it, opening a window to the world for them," explained the head of the Haikou International Talent Volunteer Service Team. As a core component of the teaching support program, such English classes will be held once or twice monthly going forward. Additionally, they regularly provide schools with reading materials such as English picture books and storybooks to enrich the school's English book collection and help students broaden their English proficiency beyond classroom hours.
